Marking Slovenian Flag Day
ource
Alongside the coat of arms and the national anthem, the Slovenian flag is one of the Republic of Slovenia's most important symbols, representing a sense of belonging to the homeland.
The white-blue-red tricolour flag was established in 1848, during the period of national awakening, when Slovenians selected the national colours based on those featured in the coat of arms of the province of Carniola and submitted them to the Austrian administration for approval.
The flag was first flown in 1848 by Slovenian students in Vienna. In Ljubljana, it was first raised on 7 April 1848 on the Zlata zvezda inn building on Wolfova Street by the student Lovro Toman. According to the Government website, this act was a direct response to the raising of the German flag on Ljubljana Castle's tower.
To mark the occasion, the Heraldica Slovenica association will organise a traditional ceremony with military honours on 12 April. According to a notice published on the association's website, the event will take place at the Geometric Centre of Slovenia (GEOSS) in Spodnja Slivna near Vače.
