Published call for proposals: €7.5 million for the revitalisation of abandoned buildings in border areas

The Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development has published a call for proposals in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia for the revitalisation of public infrastructure facilities in border problem areas for 2026. With this call for proposals, worth a total of €7.5 million, Slovenia is addressing the issue of abandoned and dilapidated buildings that spoil the area’s appearance and no longer serve their purpose.

The main objective of the call for proposals is to transform empty, unusable buildings into modern centres for the local population. The renovated buildings will have to offer new content, from supply services to social spaces or entrepreneurial initiatives. In doing so, the call for proposals follows the principles of the new European Bauhaus, which means that it encourages the involvement of the local community in the design of solutions with the aim of creating spaces that will have a long-term impact on the environment.

Self-governing local communities in border problem areas are eligible for co-financing. They can obtain up to €1.2 million in co-financing for each project. The condition for application is a valid building permit, which must be obtained no later than the date of submission of the application. The funds are intended exclusively for the renovation of abandoned buildings and not those that are still in use. Sports or park infrastructure is also not covered by the call for proposals.

The deadline for submitting applications is 14 February 2026. The funds are expected to be used in 2026. The complete documentation is available on the ministry’s website.
