Marking the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Agreement

On the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement, we remember one of the most important milestones in modern European history. The Agreement brought peace to Bosnia and Herzegovina and stability to the entire region. The diplomatic victory over war put an end to the immeasurable suffering endured by the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

For three decades, the Dayton Agreement has safeguarded Bosnia and Herzegovina's status as a sovereign, independent and multi-ethnic country. Any actions or attempts that could jeopardise the Agreement and undermine peace, stability and constitutional order in the country are unacceptable.

After the war, Bosnia and Herzegovina underwent a complex process of reconstruction and development. Today, on its path from Dayton to Brussels, this multicultural and multi-ethnic European country faces many demanding challenges. Constitutional development that will improve the functioning of the country is both expected and necessary. Additional efforts are needed to promote tolerance and mutual trust, strengthen the rule of law, and develop and consolidate democracy.

Today's anniversary should be an incentive for all decision-makers and political leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina to complete the necessary reforms and build a country – a future member of the European Union – that will provide all its inhabitants, especially young people, with a safe, stable and socially and economically favourable environment. A country where it will be possible to dream, grow and believe in the future.
