15th meeting of the Slovenian-Chinese Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation

Peter Japelj, Director-General of the Directorate for Economic, Cultural and Scientific Diplomacy at the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, co-chaired the 15th meeting of the Slovenian-Chinese Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation in Shanghai. On the Chinese side, the meeting was co-chaired by Yu Yuantang, Director General of the European Affairs Department at China’s Ministry of Commerce.

Marko Lotrič, President of the National Council of the Republic of Slovenia, and Ling Ji, Deputy Minister of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, opened the meeting with introductory remarks. The two sides took stock of bilateral economic cooperation between Slovenia and China, the business environment in both countries and EU–China economic relations, identifying opportunities to strengthen cooperation in specific areas. Among all countries, China has one of the greatest potentials for strengthening Slovenian exports. As part of its economic cooperation with China, Slovenia has also sought to reduce its trade deficit.

The Joint Slovenian-Chinese Commission for Economic Cooperation plays a key role in strengthening existing and identifying new business opportunities to enhance further economic cooperation between the two countries. According to the delegations, the list of promising sectors includes the automotive industry, agriculture, the food industry, health, pharmaceuticals, clean energy, green technologies, transport, logistics, tourism and sport.

The previous meeting of the commission took place on 23 October 2023 in Ljubljana.
