The African Great Lakes region is facing severe pressures from the effects of climate change and armed conflict. The refugee crisis triggered by conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, South Sudan and elsewhere exceeds the capacity of local authorities and humanitarian partners, threatening the provision of basic services such as healthcare, education and water supply. Humanitarian needs have been further exacerbated by climate change and natural disasters, which all contribute to high levels of food insecurity.
With its announced contribution to humanitarian and development projects, Slovenia and its implementers, the Forum for Equitable Development and Caritas Slovenia, in cooperation with the World Food Programme (WFP), will help improve conditions for a dignified life, including food security and access to drinking water, and contribute to strengthening the climate resilience of vulnerable communities in the region.
In recent years, Slovenia has responded to the humanitarian situation in the region by contributing to international humanitarian organisations. It has also allocated a three-year contribution to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) project for access to drinking water in the refugee camp in Goma, DR Congo. Through the "Grain from Ukraine" initiative, managed by the WFP, it has supported the shipment of grain from Ukraine to Kenya.
