EU funding for the Centre for the Technologies of Gene and Cell Therapy

The Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for the Centre for the Technologies of Gene and Cell Therapy (CTGCT) project. The European Regional Development Fund contribution stands at €6 million.

The project will establish a new state-of-the-art research infrastructure for the development of gene and cell therapies in the field of biomedicine. Appropriate research environments and capacities will be established to facilitate the implementation of cutting-edge research and development activities, as well as the transfer of results to the healthcare profession and the economy. The project will strengthen cooperation between research organisations and companies, contributing to Slovenia’s greater integration into the European Research Area.

The project is in line with the objectives of Slovenia’s EU Cohesion Policy Programme 2021-2027. It is implemented under the priority Innovation knowledge-based society and pursues the specific objective Developing and enhancing research and innovation capacities and the uptake of advanced technologies.

The key objectives of the project are:

·       establishment and operation of the centre of excellence in the field of gene and cell therapies,

·       strengthening research and innovation capacities in the field of biomedicine,

·       strengthening cooperation between research institutions and the economy in joint development and innovation projects.

In the long term, the centre will contribute to the development of new therapeutic approaches, strengthen scientific excellence, and increase the competitiveness of the Slovenian research and innovation space.

The beneficiary of the funds is the National Institute of Chemistry.

The European Regional Development Fund will contribute €6 million to the €15 million project.
