State Secretary Gabrič attends Ukraine Mine Action Conference in Tokyo

State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Dr Melita Gabrič, took part in the Ukraine Mine Action Conference in Tokyo, held under the auspices of the governments of Japan and Ukraine.

During the discussions, State Secretary Gabrič reaffirmed Slovenia’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in achieving security, reconstruction and development. She added that humanitarian demining is essential for the safe return of people, economic recovery and the revitalisation of local communities. Slovenia advocates a comprehensive approach that combines humanitarian assistance, development and reconstruction, placing people at the heart of all efforts.

Dr Gabrič emphasised that demining is inextricably linked to broader processes of sustainable recovery, including the strengthening of health and social systems, the restoration of agricultural land and infrastructure and the engagement of communities, women, young people and veterans in decision-making and implementation processes. She also highlighted the importance of victim rehabilitation, psychosocial support and capacity-building of local institutions, all of which contribute to Ukraine's long-term resilience.

On the sidelines of the Conference, Dr Gabrič and the Ukrainian Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture, Oleksii Sobolev, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of humanitarian demining between the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia and the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine. The Memorandum marks an important milestone in strengthening bilateral cooperation on demining, victim rehabilitation, environmental recovery and institutional development. It further consolidates the partnership between the two countries, contributing to their joint efforts to build safer and more resilient communities in Ukraine.

By signing the Memorandum and focusing on demining, reconstruction and assistance to the population, Slovenia has further strengthened its partnership with Ukraine. This reaffirms Slovenia's commitment to Ukraine's sustainable reconstruction, international cooperation and solidarity in addressing the consequences of war, while also demonstrating support for Ukraine's path towards EU membership.

As part of her visit, State Secretary Gabrič will also hold meetings with senior Japanese government officials.
