International Day for the Eradication of Poverty – Slovenia commits to sustainable development and solidarity

On the occasion of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, Slovenia reaffirms its commitment to eradicating poverty as the first goal of sustainable development in Agenda 2030. As a developed donor, Slovenia contributes to the eradication of poverty around the world through development cooperation and humanitarian aid, which is based on the global responsibility to a world where every individual should have equal opportunities for a dignified life.

In its development and humanitarian partnerships, Slovenia pays particular attention to vulnerable groups such as children, women and refugees, focusing on improved access to basic services such as quality education, access to healthcare, food security and clean drinking water, which are all fundamental factors for sustainable development and social inclusion.

Within the framework of development cooperation and humanitarian aid, Slovenia supports numerous projects that contribute to the sustainable eradication of poverty and the reduction of inequality, with particular emphasis on gender equality and environmental protection as cross-cutting themes. In doing so, it upholds the principles of effectiveness and localisation of development aid, which require action in line with the local needs of partner countries. Accordingly, assistance is targeted at priority areas – the Western Balkans, including Montenegro and North Macedonia as programme countries, the European Neighbourhood and sub-Saharan Africa.

This year’s International Day for the Eradication of Poverty coincides with the 13th Slovenian Development Days, which aim to raise awareness among the Slovenian public about the importance of global solidarity and the goals and achievements of Slovenian development cooperation and humanitarian aid. Although Slovenia has one of the lowest poverty risk rates among EU member states, global trends remain a cause for concern. This makes it all the more important for Slovenia to strengthen its development and humanitarian efforts, and to take responsibility for creating a better world.
