Slovenia increases support for UNRWA

On the sidelines of the Bled Strategic Forum, Ms. Tanja Fajon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovenia, and Mr. Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), signed a €4 million agreement to support the Agency’s work over the next four years (2025 – 2028), including €1 million per year in fully flexible funding.

"UNRWA continues to play a crucial role in providing critical services to Palestine Refugees. It must be allowed to carry out its mandate as adopted by the General Assembly. Slovenia has consistently supported UNRWA's mission until a just political solution is reached. This partnership underscores our dedication to humanitarian principles, regional stability and the protection of rights and dignity of Palestine Refugees" said Minister Fajon.

Since the war in Gaza started in October 2023, Slovenia has increased financial support to UNRWA, contributing €2,55 million and actively advocating for the Agency's work within the UN. Together with its partners, Slovenia launched an initiative in support of UNRWA through Shared Commitments, which have been endorsed by more than 120 UN Member States.

Slovenia’s strong political and financial support has been critical for ensuring that UNRWA continues serving Palestine Refugees effectively across its fields of operation. This agreement reinforces the longstanding cooperation between UNRWA and Slovenia, said Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA Commissioner-General.
