On the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, we call for peace and respect for the victims

Today, we are observing the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica. It is a day when we remember the 8,372 victims, and when the wounds of the mothers of Srebrenica and other survivors who lost their loved ones —husbands, sons and brothers — are reopened. Our thoughts are with them in their grief and deep sorrow.

“Thirty years have passed since the terrible tragedy in which war crimes were committed. Genocide, the most heinous crime, was carried out. Nothing can change these facts; no one can erase this horrific history. The suffering in Srebrenica is our collective debt. As an international community and as individuals, we must do everything in our power to protect lives and prevent such crimes from ever happening again anywhere in the world. Denying genocide and glorifying war criminals is unacceptable and reprehensible,” said Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon.

We will never forget the Srebrenica genocide and we will continue to provide assistance to the survivors. It is our moral obligation to pay tribute to the victims. The Srebrenica tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of militant nationalism, hateful populism and inciting rhetoric against other nations.

As a member of the United Nations Security Council, Slovenia is dedicated to promoting peace, safeguarding vulnerable communities, and upholding human rights and the rule of law. We strive for peaceful coexistence between countries and nations, and for Bosnia and Herzegovina to become a progressive and prosperous member of the European Union.
