Response to the decision of the Styrian provincial parliament to amend the Symbols Act

Following the parliament's decision of 1 July 2025 to approve an amendment to the Symbols Act, enshrining the Dachsteinlied as the anthem of the Austrian province of Styria, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs reiterates its stance that the use of historically outdated symbols which undermine the achieved coexistence and productive cooperation between Slovenia and Austria is unacceptable.

The Ministry has taken note of the adopted amendment stating that the lyrics of the song do not constitute a territorial claim against the Republic of Slovenia. However, the reference in the song to Slovenian territory as 'my dear homeland' contradicts the internationally recognised border and the efforts of European Union member states to foster diverse and inclusive identities. Such identities reflect the contemporary values of future-oriented coexistence and mutual respect between neighbouring countries, rather than imperial history and nostalgia.

We would like to emphasise that the actions of the Styrian coalition will have a negative impact on the continuation of successful institutional cooperation between Slovenia and the Austrian province of Styria. For example, meetings of the Slovenia-Styria Joint Committee will not be convened until further notice.

This position has been conveyed to the Austrian side on several occasions through diplomatic channels.
