Minister Fajon at the NATO Summit: Clear security guarantees for Ukraine are essential for peace

Tanja Fajon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, is attending the NATO Heads of State and Government Summit in The Hague as part of the Slovenian delegation led by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Robert Golob. She participated in the NATO-Ukraine Council Working Dinner in Foreign Ministers’ Session, which focused on the Allies' efforts for peace in Ukraine.

"The road to peace in Ukraine can only begin with an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. Slovenia supports all peace efforts based on international law and the UN Charter and acceptable to Ukraine. It is essential that the final peace agreement includes clear security guarantees for Ukraine, as such aggression must never happen again," Minister Fajon said in a discussion with foreign ministers. She stressed the importance of Russia's responsibility for the crimes in Ukraine and reiterated Slovenia's support for the establishment of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine. Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine's Foreign Minister, presented Ukraine's perspective on current developments in the country.

Minister Fajon also condemned the latest Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and said that Slovenia would help Ukraine to the best of its ability for as long as necessary. “Although there are more and more conflicts and new crisis hotspots in the world, we must not forget Ukraine and, above all, that in this war, Russia is the aggressor and Ukraine is the victim.” She expressed Slovenia's support for Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration.

In her speech, she voiced her hope that the ceasefire between Israel and Iran, which is a great relief for all, will also lead to an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, ending the unacceptable killing of civilians. Minister Fajon also used the opportunity to hold informal talks with her counterparts on other topical foreign policy issues, with a focus on developments in the wider Middle East region.

This year's NATO Summit is considered one of the most important in recent years due to the complex geopolitical situation in the world. Slovenia's main message is that unity and solidarity must prevail among the Allies, because NATO is a political and defence alliance.
