"The attacks that started on 13 June have jeopardised crucial negotiations on Iran's nuclear programme. These talks must continue. Diplomacy and political dialogue remain the only viable path to a solution," said Minister Fajon.
She also referred to the most recent report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), highlighting its alarming conclusion that the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear activities can no longer be confirmed. At the same time, she stressed that any attacks on nuclear facilities are unacceptable and in violation of international law and established norms.
Emphasising the duty to protect Slovenian and European citizens, Minister Fajon affirmed that this remains a top priority. Slovenia continues to work closely with other EU Member States and the EEAS Crisis Response Centre, with EU solidarity serving as a guiding principle: “No citizen of any Member State should be left without timely information or adequate support.”
The Minister also drew attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, stressing that it must not be forgotten. She underscored the need to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected. Regretting the postponement of the High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, which was originally scheduled to take place in New York this week, she remarked: “The cancellation of the New York conference is a missed opportunity. The EU must redouble its efforts to achieve a two-state solution, which remains the only path to lasting peace and security in the region.”
EU foreign affairs ministers discussed the security situation in the Middle East following Israel's strikes on Iran on 13 June 2025, Iran's subsequent response and further escalation of conflict. The virtual meeting allowed officials to take stock of the situation, report on contacts made, seek unity and reflect on how to reduce tensions and strengthen consular cooperation to ensure the safe evacuation of EU citizens. Ministers reiterated the EU’s strong political commitment to security in the region.
