“The war in the Middle East proved that the region’s stability is key not only for the security of the EU and the region, but also for global security. It is a painful reminder that this cradle of life and civilisation can also be a source of instability. This demonstrates the importance of regional cooperation for peace and stability and proves that the argument of power cannot be above humanity, international (humanitarian) law, international institutions and courts,” said Minister Fajon in her address.
At the helm of the MED9 group, Slovenia underlines the importance of integral regional approach to shared Mediterranean challenges and opportunities. In its endeavour for strengthened resilience and capacity in the region, the Slovenian presidency of MED9 highlights three wide priority areas: environmental sustainability and security, regional stability and human development, especially in the context of younger generations, women and education. The Slovenian Foreign Minister added that Slovenia supports the strengthening of Mediterranean higher education, including encouraging university alliances and supporting EMUNI as Slovenia’s original contribution to intercultural connection and cooperation in the region.
“The future of our region between the two Mediterranean coasts depends on the capability of future generations to tackle the challenges before us. Younger generations should be the co-creators of our shared future. This region has one of the strongest young populations, which is gradually emerging. As the region's future leaders, they should have the opportunity to express what kind of a region they want to live in and help shape it. We would like to empower younger generations with higher education, research and mobility, which would allow us to strengthen the capacity and resilience in the region and contribute to employment and economic development. With the transfer of knowledge we also encourage the culture of dialogue and peace for a safer and more stable region,” Minister Fajon underlined.
She concluded by assuring the panel that, as an actively engaged Mediterranean country, Slovenia will continue to strive to prioritise the Mediterranean region on the EU's agenda. Stronger engagement in the Mediterranean is in the interest of the entire EU, as developments in this region eventually impact the EU.
The purpose of this year’s annual international EMUNI science conference is the focus on academic discussions on the importance of higher education, research and innovation for cooperation in the Mediterranean. Topics include the resilience of higher education in Palestine, the importance of brain circulation, strengthening mobility in the Mediterranean and financial schemes and support mechanisms for higher education and research. A wide range of academics, professors, scientists, university chancellors, representatives of university associations from all over the Mediterranean as well as the UfM Deputy Secretary General Joan Borrell usually attend the conference.
