Completion of the upgrade of the Borovnica railway station and part of the section between Brezovica and Borovnica
A symbolic event at Borovnica railway station marked the completion of the upgrade of Borovnica railway station and the section between Brezovica and Borovnica, which is part of the wider project to renovate the Ljubljana–Divača railway line. The works took place from September 2022 to May 2025.
As part of the renovation of the Borovnica railway station, a 160-metre-long side platform and a 240-metre-long island platform with shelters and associated equipment were built. The track infrastructure was also renovated, with 2.91 kilometres of station tracks and the catenary upgraded, along with nine switches.
For easier and safer access to the platforms, a new 24.3-metre-long underpass was built with two elevators and staircases, which now provides safe and easier access to the platforms for all passengers, especially those with reduced mobility. The station building has also been modernised, including the facade, waiting room and toilets. 1.24 kilometres of noise barriers were also installed.
The project also included the upgrading the Brezovica–Preserje (approximately 4 kilometres) and Preserje–Borovnica (approximately 3.93 kilometres) sections. A total of 16.68 kilometres of existing track was renovated to ensure D4 category axle and length loads, and 16.69 kilometres of the rail network was renovated to improve electrification and traffic reliability. The Notranje Gorice station was renovated and equipped with new platform infrastructure. A new 33.5-metre-long replacement bridge was built in Notranje Gorice, signalling and safety devices were renovated, and 8.78 kilometres of noise barriers were installed.
The total construction cost is just under EUR 112 million, of which EUR 44.5 million has been contributed from the EU's Recovery and Resilience Fund.
