Armenia is an important part of the Middle Corridor, a vital transport route connecting the region with the EU. Its stability has implications for Slovenia and for the connectivity of the Eastern Partnership with Central Europe.
State Secretary Štucin met with the Armenian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vahan Kostanyan, and resumed the bilateral dialogue and reaffirmed the positive relations between the two countries, as previously confirmed by the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon, during her visit to Armenia in April this year. Discussions focused on Armenian’s prospects for EU accession, the current geopolitical situation and the status of peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The State Secretary also met with the Palestinian Authority's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Varsen Aghabekian, and reiterated Slovenia's firm support for the Palestinian people and the Palestinian Authority. As Minister Fajon stated in Madrid, we are witnessing grave violations of international and humanitarian law in Gaza. Humanitarian and medical aid must reach the civilian population in Gaza, and Israel must not use the withholding of humanitarian aid as political leverage.
State Secretary Štucin also met with the Registrar of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Osvaldo Zavala Giler, to discuss the current activities of the ICC under the leadership of Deputy Prosecutor Khan and the implications of potential sanctions affecting the Slovenian Judge at the ICC. Slovenia remains a strong advocate for the independence and impartiality of the Court and all judicial institutions, as they are vital to an effective campaign against impunity.
