Happy Europe Day!

Every year on Europe Day, we commemorate the signing of the historic Schuman Declaration which, on 9 May 1950, laid the foundations for today's European Union. This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War – a milestone that should serve as a reminder that peace is worth every effort.

This reminder is even more important today than in previous years and decades. We should therefore always remember Schuman's vision, which was based on the tragic experience of war and the conviction that lasting peace among the peoples of Europe requires courageous political decisions. Stability, cooperation and coexistence are first and foremost the result of conscious political will and shared responsibility.

In times of global challenges, we must cultivate an awareness that the European Union and its achievements cannot be taken for granted. The unity of the Member States is not the result of chance, but of vision, courage and willingness to compromise. At the heart of European integration is the European socio-economic model, based on democracy, the rule of law, individual freedoms and sustainable development. This model is attractive both within the Union and beyond, and remains the foundation of prosperity and quality of life in Europe. Young Europeans recognise in this vision the kind of future they want: a fair, inclusive and sustainable future.

Slovenia is committed to a strong and united European Union, which will continue to be the guardian and unwavering defender of its fundamental values and interests. On Europe Day, we would therefore like to reiterate the importance of cooperation between European countries and citizens in the shaping of a common European space. "Europe is not just a place where we live – it is a shared commitment to values that we must defend, uphold and honour. Only together can we continue to preserve a Union that is the guardian of peace, freedom and prosperity for all – in Europe and beyond. Happy Europe Day!” said Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon.
