Message from Prime Minister Robert Golob on the occasion of May Day, International Labour Day
May Day carries an important historical message – a message of the struggle for labour rights, for the rights of all those whose work shapes our daily lives. Your dedication and hard work are the two values we honour today. Yet even more important than celebration is the continued recognition of this contribution by the state – a state to which you give and which must know how to give back.
The rights we enjoy today must not be taken for granted. They were won through the efforts and perseverance of generations before us. It is our shared responsibility to safeguard, nurture and strengthen them. Decent work, fair pay and safe working conditions must remain the cornerstone of a modern and progressive society. The future we are building as a community must be based on respect for labour, the enforcement of rights and the recognition of every individual’s contribution to the common good.
Slovenia remains committed to the values of solidarity, fairness and dignity. We continue to develop a social state founded on accessible public healthcare, quality education and the protection of the most vulnerable among us. As we recognise that access to healthcare services is one of the prerequisites for a decent life, the Government has made a commitment to preserving and fostering a high-quality and accessible public healthcare system for all, regardless of income, place of residence or life circumstances.
Strengthening public healthcare and the public healthcare network has been, and remains, one of the key priorities of this Government. This is a promise we made to the people and our goal is clear: a more accessible, transparent and higher-quality public healthcare system where the patient comes first. We are strengthening a system that does not serve the profit of the few but the health of all. That is what we set out to do and we will continue to do so.
I wish you all a happy Labour Day, which I am proud to celebrate and honour with you.
On this, and every day, let us be guided by the words of Boris Pahor:
"Where there is no respect for the person, there is no decency in labour."
