Resolution on the national programme for the prevention and suppression of crime 2024–2028 adopted

The Resolution on the national programme for the prevention and suppression of crime 2024–2028 paves the way to better civilian security. It is a fundamental guideline for formulating the Government’s national security policy.

The safety of the individual is an inviolable value, particularly at a time when we are faced with the challenges of criminality that transcend traditional borders. It is therefore crucial to establish effective mechanisms for preventing and handling various forms of crime, as this is the only way to ensure safety for people and society at large in our complex modern environment.

This is a period in which we are dealing with increasingly complex forms of crime that require decisive action and comprehensive crime prevention and suppression strategies. In response to the complexity of today's security challenges, we have drafted the Resolution on the national programme for the prevention and suppression of crime 2024–2028.

The resolution addresses the following key areas:

  • The prevention of violence as a major social challenge that takes many forms that affect the sense of security and crime level. Various forms of violence are related to complex sociological aspects, such as socio-economic status, the use of modern technologies and the degree of gender equality.
  • Hate speech and the spread of hatred are crucial as regards respect for human rights and citizens’ safety. The Resolution’s purpose is to encourage society's awareness of the inadmissibility of hate speech and to strengthen activities to reduce its occurrence.
  • Economic crime is evolving at a rapid rate, which requires flexible and coordinated measures at the national and international level. Intersectoral cooperation is the key to effectively combatting this form of crime.
  • Public healthcare has measures in place to improve the health of the entire population, especially of groups exposed to greater risks.
  • Information security and cybercrime are at the forefront of the resolution due to the constant development of technology, which brings new challenges and threats. It is important to continuously strengthen the information security and education to combat cybercrime.
  • Radicalisation, extreme violence and terrorism require a multidimensional approach that includes prevention and response to these developments.
  • Organised crime as a transnational phenomenon requires coordinated approach and effective tracking of illegally acquired assets. The resolution envisages comprehensive solutions to combat this form of crime.

The Resolution on the national programme for the prevention and suppression of crime 2024–2028 was confirmed by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia at its meeting on 22 February 2024 and was adopted by the National Assembly on 26 April 2024.
