Prime Minister: Our voice will be heard in New York and taken into account around the world

Following the Republic of Slovenia's election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, Prime Minister Robert Golob, in a joint press statement, stressed that this was a milestone for the whole country and that we would make sure that our voice is heard and taken into account.

"If last year we made our voice heard and taken into account in Brussels, next year we will make our voice heard in New York and taken into account around the world," the Prime Minister made clear.

Today, for the first time since the election, the Prime Minister, the President of the Republic, Nataša Pirc Musar, and the Foreign Minister, Tanja Fajon addressed the public together and thanked all those who had contributed to the candidacy project.  As the Prime Minister pointed out, the 153 votes of support gathered show that Slovenia is once again recognised on the international stage as a constructive player and a country that helps solve challenges with original ideas. "It's not just Europe or the United States that has supported us. The whole world has supported us because it believes in our peaceful, solidarity-based and constructive foreign policy. The world is counting on us, as a small member state with no hidden agenda, to make the world a better place for all countries," added the Prime Minister.

The position of non-permanent member of the Security Council for the period 2024–2025 gives us a great responsibility, but also an opportunity. As the Prime Minister announced, we will continue to take good initiatives in environmental diplomacy and in the search for peace in Ukraine. "Slovenia can work constructively within the United Nations to find ways to help bring the war in Ukraine to an end and to rebuild the country as soon as possible," he concluded.

The election to the Security Council is one of the greatest achievements of Slovenian diplomacy and puts Slovenia on the world map.
