World Bee Day 2023 – "Bee Green"

On this year's World Bee Day, Ambassador Mihael Zupančič visited a Danish organic beekeeper Mr Peter Sjøgren in Hillerød, 40 km north of Copenhagen.

The visit was running under a slogan "Bee Green" and prepared in collaboration with the Danish Beekeepers Association (Danmarks Biavlerforening) as well as coordinated with the European Environment Agency and Food Nation Denmark.

Mr Flemming Vejsnæs, biologist and advisor at the Danish Beekeepers Association presented Insignia-EU programme, which aims to design and test a non-invasive, scientifically proven citizen science environmental monitoring protocol using honey bee colonies for the detection of pesticides, microplastics, heavy metals, and air pollutants. Peter and his bees participate in the programme.

The main message of the "Bee Green" campaign is that care for the bees, other animals, plants and people preserves biodiversity and grants food security. Environment friendly and innovative technologies in food industry, together with local and regenerative agriculture, prevent further decline of bees and other pollinators, which are inevitable for pollination and abundant crops. Food security and self-sufficiency in food production are corner stones of a resilient society.

Danish Beekeepers Association is getting ready for an Apimondia world congress to be held in Copenhagen in second half of 2025 and Embassy looks forward to cooperating more on the World Bee Day agenda with Danish partners.
