International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs joins the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Violence against women remains one of the most common human rights violations around the world. For many years, the global average of one in three women experiencing violence in their lifetime has remained unchanged.

The global context has become increasingly less favourable to gender equality in recent years, and it is therefore crucial that we insist on securing and upholding the accepted international standards and commitments in this area. Violence against women and girls is one of the key obstacles to gender equality. The increasing frequency of attacks on women human rights defenders and gender equality activists raises serious concerns.

"Slovenia is actively engaging in the international community in support of gender equality and civil society action. I personally and all of us at the Ministry will continue to strive for women’s empowerment and respect, and for the promotion of equality, non-discrimination and freedom of expression, which are the cornerstones of any democratic society," said Minister Tanja Fajon.
