Minister of Foreign Affairs Tanja Fajon met with representatives of the Slovenian national community in Italy. The meeting, which was aimed at exchanging views on current issues concerning the situation of the Slovenian national community in Italy, is part of the Minister’s regular dialogue with Slovenians living abroad.

"I would like to thank you for your dedicated work and assure you of Slovenia’s continued support in matters that are relevant for the existence and further development of the Slovenian national community in Italy. It is essential that all representatives are heading in the same direction," the Minister emphasised.

Minister Fajon particularly stressed the importance of cross-border cooperation and highlighted the European Capital of Culture 2025 project of Nova Gorica and Gorizia. "This project reinforces the message of respectful coexistence and creative cooperation between all the inhabitants of the area and beyond", the Minister said, urging people to get involved, as actively as possible, in the projects.

Representatives of the Slovenian national community in Italy briefed the Minister on the progress of the procedures for the handover of the Trieste National Hall to the Slovenian community and on the possibilities for regulating the representation of the Slovenian community in the Italian parliament. They also discussed the promotion of the Slovene language and the challenges of irregular immigration.

The Minister expressed particular thanks to Senator Tatjana Rojc for her work in the Italian Senate during her last term of office and congratulated her on her election in the September parliamentary elections in Italy.

Senator Rojc expressed special thanks to the Minister and to the Slovenian diplomatic corps for maintaining regular dialogue and being such a valuable source of support.
