Message by the Prime Minister on Reformation Day

We, Slovenians, are who we are because of our language. Without the Slovenian language, there would be no Slovenians. Without it, there would be no Slovenia. We celebrate Reformation Day to remind ourselves that the standard Slovenian language is the foundation of our statehood. And we owe this, above all, to Primož Trubar, the Protestant priest from Rašica, who founded our language with the first Slovenian book, the Catechism (Katekizem), and the Abecedarium (Abecednik), which was dedicated »to all young and ordinary people«.

The awareness that our future is based on young people and their education is not the only source of inspiration we can draw from Trubar. We also know him for his phrase »to stand and withstand«. He lived in turbulent times, marked by military invasions and threats from abroad, as well as by ideological divisions and disputes in his homeland. He therefore spent a major part of his life in exile. However, he never lost faith in himself and in his »beloved Slovenians«.

It is therefore right that in times like this, when war is raging again not far from us and our prosperity can no longer be taken for granted, we remember the rebellious and persistent Trubar. We are not few and we will endure. As will Slovenia, the European Union and our allies. We are ready for the challenges ahead and we will overcome them. Like Trubar we will stand and withstand. As a nation and as a country born from his word, as we cannot do otherwise.
