Press release on the EC recommendation to grant candidate status to BiH

  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs
As part of the enlargement package, the European Commission today issued a recommendation that Bosnia and Herzegovina be awarded EU candidate status but will have to meet additional requirements before making further steps on the path to the Union. This is the same formula that the Commission has already applied in the case of Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the recommendation as an important step towards the granting of EU candidate status. In the next stage, this will be decided on by the EU heads of state and government at the European Council.

"This is an important and positive message for the future of BiH, its citizens and especially its young people. I hope that today's decision is regarded as a success by both the political elite and the citizens of BiH, and as a commitment to carry out the necessary reforms. In my view, the positive recommendation is also an important achievement of Slovenian foreign policy, as it was Slovenia which, in the run-up to the June European Council, tabled a concrete proposal for awarding the candidate status. After the European Council, Slovenia engaged at all levels to explain to partners in the European Union why Bosnia and Herzegovina should be granted candidate status. We have explained that this is a strategic decision sending a clear message to BiH and to the entire Western Balkans region that its future lies within the EU. This message is particularly important in the light of the changed security and political situation in Europe resulting from the Russian aggression against Ukraine," said Minister Fajon.

Under its new leadership, Slovenian diplomacy has proved to be proactive and serious about its support for the Western Balkans - not just declaratively, but also very concretely. "Given that I have dedicated most of my political career to the Western Balkans region, including BiH, I am particularly pleased with today's positive recommendation from the European Commission," said the Minister when announcing the Commission's decision.

In its political and diplomatic contacts with EU member states and institutions, Slovenia will continue its efforts for Bosnia and Herzegovina to be awarded EU candidate status based on the European Commission's recommendation. Much will depend on the developments in the country itself – governments should be formed at all levels as soon as possible after the October elections, and the adoption of legislation related to EU accession should be addressed.
