This year, Slovenia again joined the global Fête de la Musique initiative, which takes place on the same day in more than 120 countries and over 400 cities. This year's music festivals took place in four Slovenian cities – Ljubljana, Maribor, Murska Sobota, and Piran and its surroundings.

The one-day Live Music Festival featured amateur and professional musicians from a variety of musical genres, from classical to jazz, electronic to rock, in a variety of outdoor venues. Once again, there was something for all music tastes.

On the occasion of World Music Day, the Slovenian Statistical Office published some data showing that the COVID-19 pandemic cut the occurrence of concerts and other music-related events by around 60% in 2020 compared to the year before.

The Fête de la Musique initiative was launched in France in 1982 by the then Minister of Culture, Jacques Lang. He realised that, in France, there were so many people of all generations involved in music and that a day should be set when French cities would shine in all their musical glory and music would be played everywhere.

Up to this day, more than 700 cities from over 150 countries have joined the initiative. Slovenia joins the celebrations for the ninth time.
