Prime Minister Janez Janša holds talks with US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, spoke today with the US Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken. In their talks, State Secretary Blinken and Prime Minister Janša stressed the need to continue supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity through robust security assistance. They condemned the horrific atrocities committed by Russian forces in its unprovoked and unjustified war against Ukraine and stressed the need to hold Moscow accountable.

The Secretary of State and the Prime Minister also discussed Slovenia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2024–2025 period, and the former reiterated the United States’ belief that Slovenia is a very well qualified candidate that, if elected, would be a credible voice in contributing to the maintenance of international peace and security.

Slovenia and the United States have been allies since diplomatic relations were established 30 years ago. In the challenging circumstances of the last two years, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia has strongly oriented Slovenia towards the North Atlantic and European dimensions as an active and responsible member of the EU and NATO.

State Secretary Blinken thanked Prime Minister Janša for Slovenia’a active role in finding effective solutions to help Ukraine and ensure peace on the continent, while Prime Minister Janša thanked State Secretary Blinken for the strategically important role of the United States in ensuring the security of NATO’s European members and for its diplomatic, humanitarian and defence efforts to help Ukraine.
