We have proved, like many times before, that even a small hen can lay golden eggs, and it has been no different at the Beijing Winter Olympics in which Slovenian athletes have won seven medals so far. Two gold medals have been won by ski jumpers: Urša Bogataj became a champion in normal hill individual competitions, while another gold medal was won by Nika Križnar, Timi Zajc, Urša Bogataj in Peter Prevc  in the mixed team competition.

Winners of silver medals included two giant slalomists, namely, Tim Mastnak in snowboarding, and Žan Kranjec in alpine skiing, and ski jumpers in large hill team competition. Bronze medals were brought home by Nika Križnar for ski jumping and Gloria Kotnik for parallel slalom snowboarding.

Looking back in history, these are the second most successful Olympics for Slovenia. Our athletes won more medals, a total of eight, only at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Nevertheless, Slovenia is already ranked among the world's winter sport superpowers in terms of the number of medals won per capita and, ranking second behind Norway, attracts a lot of attention and interest in China. By the end of competitions last Sunday, Norway’s medal haul totalled 21, which is one medal per 258,000 inhabitants, while Slovenia scored one medal per 346,000 inhabitants. The third ranking Austria won a total of 14 medals or one medal per 643,000 inhabitants.
