State Secretary Raščan attends the RIAC seminar and political consultations in Moscow

State Secretary Stanislav Raščan participated in a seminar hosted by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) on EU-Russia relations and held political consultations with Alexander Grushko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

At the seminar hosted by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), State Secretary Raščan briefed the participants on key foreign policy challenges during the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU. On EU-Russia relations, he highlighted cooperation in culture and language as a significant binding element. He expressed regret that EU-Russia relations are currently poor, noting that respect for international law and fundamental freedoms is crucial for maintaining peace in the world. Mitja Slavinec, State Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia, presented the activities in education and science between the EU and the Russian Federation at the seminar. 

At the meeting with the Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Grushko, State Secretary Raščan exchanged views on bilateral relations. The officials confirmed the diversified cooperation in the economy, culture, science and education between the two countries, with State Secretary Raščan stressing that the Slovenian language study programme at the Lomonosov Moscow State University should be preserved. He also underlined the importance of the future work of the Intergovernmental Slovenian-Russian Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation to boosting economic cooperation between the two countries. The officials went on to exchange the views on the current foreign policy issues: the situation in the Western Balkans, Nagorno-Karabakh and Afghanistan.

Outside the political consultations, State Secretary Raščan laid a wreath at the memorial to Slovenian victims of both world wars on the territory of the Russian Federation together with State Secretary Slavinec and visited the Diplomatic Academy.

State Secretary Raščan also held separate talks with Konstantin Kosachev, Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.
