In May 2021, the General Affairs Council adopted a document on the application of the revised enlargement methodology to the accession negotiations with Serbia and Montenegro. During the Conferences, both candidate countries declared their readiness to continue negotiations in line with the revised methodology.

State Secretary Dovžan called on both countries to continue and intensify their reform efforts, assuring them of Slovenia’s support for their European integration. He informed them of Slovenia’s plan to organise an intergovernmental conference with both countries following the announcement of the European Commission’s enlargement package in the autumn. State Secretary Dovžan also presented the priorities of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union regarding enlargement towards the Western Balkans and went on to mention the planned EU-Western Balkans summit scheduled for early October this year.
