MED9 meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs
The first part of the discussion on current regional foreign policy issues will be dedicated to the exchange of views on recent developments in the wider Middle East. Ministers will aim for common views and possible proposals on where and how the MED9 countries can contribute to the de-escalation and stabilization of the situation in the wider Middle East.
The second part of the debate will focus on the preparation of the New Pact for the Mediterranean, due to be published by the European Commission in autumn. At the meeting, the MED9 countries will present their joint contribution for the New Pact. The contribution draws on common objectives, priorities and principles. It emphasizes the importance of partnership and the synergies between countries on both sides of the Mediterranean. MED9 countries as a bridge between the Northern and Southern parts of the Mediterranean stress that need for effective implementation of objectives based on strengthening partnerships, shared commitments and aligned priorities. MED9 countries see this as the best way to strengthen the resilience of the entire Mediterranean region to numerous challenges such as: climate change, water, food and energy security, economic development, connectivity, migration and mobility, as well as stability and security.
In her capacity as Chair of the MED9, Minister Fajon will present the joint non-paper "MED9 Contribution to the Preparation of the New Pact for the Mediterranean" at the meeting and convey the outcome of the debate at the Foreign Affairs Council meeting the day after the MED9 Foreign Ministers' meeting.
In addition to the MED9 Foreign Ministers, Slovenia also invited the High Representative and Vice-President of the European Commission for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, the European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, and the Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, Nasser Kamel to the event.
