The Legal Service carries out specialist tasks related to the representation of the ministry and its constituent bodies in civil court proceedings, including claims for damages and commercial disputes, as well as in administrative disputes and enforcement proceedings.

Actions in administrative disputes concern a wide range of administrative matters and are often filed in cases involving interference with human rights and fundamental freedoms where no other form of judicial protection is guaranteed. The compensation claims handled by the Legal Service primarily relate to injuries sustained by police officers in the course of their duties, other incidents causing loss or damage that occur in the course of police procedures and claims arising from employment relationships, including claims concerning workplace mobbing. The Legal Service is responsible for conducting and deciding second-instance administrative procedures, primarily under the Foreigners Act, concerning decisions and orders issued by the police regarding the refusal of entry to foreign nationals and the unlawful residence of foreign nationals in the Republic of Slovenia. It also participates in the review of contracts and other bilateral legal instruments to which the ministry or its constituent bodies are a party. In addition, it prepares legal opinions, provides legal assistance to the organisational units of the ministry and its constituent bodies, and participates in the review of legislation and internal legal acts.
