The Department for Bilateral Economic Cooperation I plans and is responsible for Slovenia's bilateral economic cooperation with the USA, Canada, Australia, the countries of Latin America, and the countries of Western Europe, Central Europe and the Western Balkans. The Department is also responsible for Slovenia's activities in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

It analyses bilateral economic cooperation with other countries and drafts proposals for the deepening of such cooperation. In cooperation with Slovenia's representations abroad and competent institutions, it provides support to Slovenian companies in entering foreign markets, including the identification of business opportunities, and promotes the internationalisation of the Slovenian economy with the aim of increasing Slovenian exports and achieving their greater geographic diversity. In order to promote internationalisation, it participates in initiatives for expanding the network of honorary consuls.

It coordinates and organises visits by economic delegations accompanying the highest state representatives of Slovenia on visits abroad and participates in the organisation of visits by foreign economic delegations accompanying the highest representatives of foreign countries on visits to Slovenia. It participates in the organisation of business conferences and seminars on the margins of such visits and carries out activities related to visits by economic delegations that have already taken place.

It participates in the drafting of proposals and the organisation of joint appearances by companies at fairs abroad, promotes the expansion of the network of Slovenian business clubs and participates in the promotion and marketing of Slovenia as a destination for foreign direct investment with a view to increasing, as much as possible, foreign direct investment in Slovenia.

It prepares the meetings of joint commissions for Slovenia's economic cooperation with countries with which such form of cooperation is agreed. It is also responsible for the preparation of international agreements in the area of bilateral economic relations.
