Matej Kumerdej was born on 31 May 1992. He attended primary school in Bled. After completing the Upper Secondary School of Construction, Geodesy and Economics in Ljubljana, he continued his studies at the European Faculty of Law in Nova Gorica. He graduated in 2014 and obtained a master’s degree in 2016.

He began his career in 2017 as a trainee at the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia, in the Supervision Division and the Tax Division. In 2020, he joined the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia as a specialised assistant in the Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) Deputy Group. He was primarily involved in the fields of finance, the economy and public finance oversight. Later he served as the Deputy Secretary of the SDS Deputy Group and was responsible for the organisation and coordination of its work.

In 2025, he continued his career in the professional services of the National Assembly, where he was involved in the preparation of legal opinions, public procurement, investments and maintenance. Among other roles, he served as the Deputy Head of the Improvements and Maintenance Section.
