Ambassador and university lecturer with thirty years of experience in diplomacy, European affairs and international relations.

He was born on 27 November 1965 in Ljubljana. He graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana in 1989 and obtained a master’s degree from the School of Economics and Business of the University of Ljubljana in 1999. In March 2020, he defended his doctoral dissertation at the Faculty of Government and European Studies of the New University, within the International and Diplomatic Studies programme, entitled “Solidarity as the Foundation and the Means of the European Integration Process”, and obtained a doctorate.

He served as State Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Director-General of the European Affairs and Bilateral Political Relations Directorate. Between 2005 and 2010, he served as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Slovenia to the European Union. During Slovenia's Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2008, he chaired the Permanent Representatives Committee (COREPER II).

He is also an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the New University. His research focuses on European integration, solidarity in the European Union, the political economy of the Economic and Monetary Union, geopolitics and migration. He is the author of the scientific monograph Povezani v usodi? Solidarnost in njene meje v evropskem povezovanju (Bound by Destiny? Solidarity and Its Limits in European Integration). He speaks English, French, German, Serbian and Croatian. He is married and has two children.
