The Office for National Minorities is an independent government office. The Office comprehensively monitors the implementation of constitutional and legislative provisions relating to the special rights of the autochthonous Italian and Hungarian national communities and the position and special rights of the Roma community in Slovenia. The implementation of constitutional and legislative provisions relating to individual areas is monitored by the competent state authorities or the authorities of self-governing local communities. The tasks of the Office are defined in detail in the ordinance on its establishment.

The Office performs tasks related to the position, rights, obligations and development opportunities of the Italian and Hungarian national communities and the Roma community that are necessary for fulfilment of the responsibilities and obligations of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia on the basis of the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia and regulations in force, provided that these tasks do not fall within the competence of other state authorities or the authorities of self-governing local communities. In performing such tasks, the Office cooperates with administrative authorities and research, non-governmental, and other organisations. It also considers issues pertaining to exercise of the special rights of the Italian and Hungarian national communities and the Roma community. In matters relating to exercise of the special rights of the Italian national community in Slovenia, the Office cooperates with the competent authorities of the Republic of Croatia. It prepares analyses, materials, initiatives and proposals for sessions of the Government, its working bodies and other state authorities, and monitors the effect of the adopted decisions on the Italian and Hungarian national communities and the Roma community.

The Office is responsible for the implementation of decisions regarding the Italian and Hungarian national communities and the Roma community in Slovenia, provided these tasks do not fall within the competence of other state authorities or the authorities of self-governing local communities. It also performs expert, administrative and technical tasks for the Government Commission for the National Communities and the Government Commission for the Protection of the Roma Community and cooperates with the Commission of the National Assembly for the National Communities.

It participates in different working bodies of ministries, research institutions and other organisations founded or co-founded by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia that consider and examine the position, rights, and obligations of the Italian and Hungarian national communities and the Roma community in Slovenia.

It plans and monitors the use of funds for the needs of the Italian and Hungarian national communities and the Roma community on the basis of its financial plan. It performs tasks with regard to the Italian and Hungarian national communities and the Roma community pertaining to the relevant bodies of the Council of Europe, the European Union, the United Nations, and other international organisations.

In addition to the aforementioned tasks, the Office performs other tasks with regard to the Italian and Hungarian national communities and the Roma community in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia and the legislation in force.
