National Medical Ethics Committee

The National Medical Ethics Committee of the Republic of Slovenia is a consultative body of the Minister of Health which deals with issues in the field of medical ethics and deontology and provides consensuses, opinions and clarifications on individual issues in this field. It is exclusively responsible for making determinations on ethical issues that are relevant for the unification of ethical practices at the national level.

At the National Medical Ethics Committee, we have a duty to fulfil our statutory responsibilities while upholding the ethical mission of healthcare. We are responsible for assessing the ethical integrity of medical practices and medical research (scientific research projects in the field of health, biomedical research, drug trials, the use of complementary traditional and alternative forms of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation). In addition, we also provide opinions and consensuses in the field of medical and healthcare ethics. Our mission is to protect the lives and dignity of patients and individuals treated or involved in research, while respecting all the moral and ethical traditions of the medical profession and healthcare activities, as well as international conventions and declarations.

The president and members of the Committee shall be appointed by the Minister of Health from among experienced and eminent experts in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, psychology, law, philosophy, sociology and the humanities, as well as the lay community. The term of office of the Committee shall be four years and may be renewed at the end of the term of office. Local Medical Ethics Committees also operate along with the National Committee.
