National Assembly

The National Assembly is a representative and legislative body that performs all the main functions performed by modern parliaments, i.e. legislative, electoral and supervisory functions. As part of its legislative function, it adopts amendments to the Constitution, laws and other general acts, the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly, the state budget and the annual financial statement of the national budget, ratifies treaties, and calls referendums. As part of its supervisory function, it orders parliamentary inquiries, decides on votes of confidence or no confidence in the Government, and decides on the impeachment of the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and ministers before the Constitutional Court. As part of its electoral function, it appoints and dismisses senior public office holders.

The highest representative and legislative authority

The National Assembly is a collegial body composed of 90 deputies, who are citizens of the Republic of Slovenia. Members of the Italian and Hungarian national communities are also represented in the National Assembly, with each of the national community being represented by one deputy, regardless of the number of its members.

Composition of the National Assembly

Deputies of the National Assembly are elected by direct, secret ballot on the basis of universal and equal suffrage. Any citizen who has attained the age of 18 and has legal capacity and in respect of whom the parental right has not been extended beyond the age of majority may be elected as a deputy.

The term of office of a deputy lasts for four years unless interrupted by the dissolution of the National Assembly and early elections. The term of the National Assembly may be more than four years, but only in the case of war or state of emergency.

The office of deputy is performed on a professional basis, and for that reason, deputies may not hold other offices or carry out other activities which are incompatible with the office of deputy.
