Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon took part in a two-day meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers in Brussels, which focused on NATO’s 75th anniversary, preparations for the Washington Summit in July, support for Ukraine and strengthening cooperation with partners in the Indo-Pacific region. She underlined the importance of unity among allies on key strategic issues.

Prime Minister Robert Golob today met with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels.

Ambassador Dr Andrej Benedejčič, Permanent Representative of Slovenia to NATO, took part in the visit of the North Atlantic Council to Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1-2 February 2024. Led by Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană, Allied Ambassadors and Invitee Sweden met with members of the Presidency, the Chairwoman and members of the Council of Ministers, the Foreign and Defence Ministers as well as members of the Collegium of House of Peoples and the House of Representatives of BiH. The programme included discussions with international community actors and civil society.

Ambassador Dr Andrej Benedejčič, Permanent Representative of Slovenia to NATO, hosted a reception at NATO Headquarters for members of NATO Civil Society Advisory Panel for Women, Peace and Security, as well as Allies and partner countries.

State Secretary Sanja Štiglic attends a two-day meeting of NATO and Swedish Foreign Ministers. They discussed the current international situation, which is marked by the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East. Ministers exchanged views on the situation in the Western Balkans. For the first time, a NATO-Ukraine Council meeting was held in the format of foreign ministers.

The women’s programme taking place on the margins of the NATO Summit of heads of state and government in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, was also attended by the Slovenian Prime Minister’s partner, Tina Gaber.

On Thursday, 15 and Friday, 16 June 2023, Minister of Defence Marjan Šarec attended the NATO Defence Ministers' Meeting in Brussels.

State Secretary Samuel Žbogar attended the informal meeting of NATO ministers of foreign affairs in Oslo. On the first day, State Secretary Žbogar, together with ministers of foreign affairs, attended the ceremony for the victims of the terrorist attack that happened in Norway on 22 July 2011. On the second day, he represented Slovenia at the informal ministerial meeting.

Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon took part in the two-day Meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Brussels, which coincided with the 74th anniversary of the signing of NATO's founding document in 1949, and she also officially welcomed Finland as NATO's 31st member.

Slovenian Minister of Defence Marjan Šarec attended the two-day NATO Defence Ministers' Meeting in Brussels. The discussions focused on the war in Ukraine, strengthening the Alliance's deterrence and defence posture, and the upgrading of the commitment on defence spending to be adopted at the NATO Summit in Vilnius in July.

The National Security Council (SNAV), consisting of the Prime Minister, the Minister of Defence, the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Infrastructure, and the Director of the Slovenian Intelligence and Security Agency, met today at the first regular meeting in this term.

Marjan Šarec, the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Slovenia, attended the meeting of NATO Ministers of Defence in Brussels. The war in Ukraine, strengthening the deterrence and defence of the Alliance, investing in defence and incentives to increase stocks of military equipment and industrial capacities were at the forefront of the ministers’ discussions. On the margins of the meeting, Minister Šarec signed a declaration on strengthening bilateral cooperation with Christine Lambrecht, the German Federal Minister of Defence.

On Thursday, the National Assembly ratified the NATO accession protocols for Sweden and Finland. Before the vote, MPs were addressed by Prime Minister Robert Golob, who recalled the historic nature of the moment and the right of nations to decide on their own security and defence.

After the three-day meeting of the NATO heads of state and government, the Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob stressed that the plans to increase defence expenditure were not due to political pressure, but to the global situation, which has radically deteriorated since the previous summit of the alliance.

Minister Fajon participated in the informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers and in the roundtable discussion of women foreign and defence ministers from allied countries on Women, Peace and Security (WPS).

Prime Minister Robert Golob is attending the NATO Summit in Madrid, where the NATO Heads of State and Government will discuss the most pressing security issues with the key partners and approve a new strategic concept of the Alliance for the next decade and beyond with the aim of ensuring that NATO continues to implement its most important mission and responsibility – to ensure the collective defence of the Alliance's members and the security of one billion people.
