The discussions focused on current security challenges, particularly in the areas of migration and the fight against organised crime, and on efforts to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, which will be underpinned by a bilateral agreement between the Romanian and Slovenian police forces.
The two sides exchanged views on the security situation in Europe, with particular emphasis on the Western Balkan migration route. State Secretary Kangler highlighted the importance of cooperation with countries along this route and Slovenia’s efforts to strengthen cooperation with Italy, Croatia and partners in the Western Balkans.
With regard to migration management at European Union level, State Secretary Kangler emphasised the importance of a joint European response: “These challenges are international in nature and therefore require a joint and coordinated response. We believe that the Pact on Migration and Asylum provides a sound basis for the effective management of migration, and its swift and consistent implementation is of paramount importance.”
The State Secretary also highlighted the importance of enhancing the exchange of information relating to the prosecution of economic crime and corruption in society.
Another topic discussed at the meeting was how to prevent the smuggling of migrants and combating organised crime. As international criminal organisations operate across borders, the timely exchange of information and coordinated operational cooperation between the competent authorities are essential for their effective detection and prosecution. Slovenia and Romania are already working together in this area within the framework of the European EMPACT platform, particularly in investigating the activities of organised criminal groups along the Western Balkans route.
Both sides praised the good cooperation between the Slovenian and Romanian law enforcement authorities, both at the political and operational levels. State Secretary Kangler particularly commended the cooperation at the Oradea Police Cooperation Centre, which is designed to facilitate the rapid exchange of information with other countries.
