EU funding for safer and user-friendly streets in Celje and Murska Sobota

The Ministry of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for two street redevelopment projects in Celje and Murska Sobota. The projects aim to promote safer, more equitable and more sustainable city streets, while encouraging walking and cycling. The European Regional Development Fund will contribute €3.29 million to the projects.

Redevelopment of part of the Prešeren street in Celje

Part of the Prešeren street in Celje will be comprehensively renovated to improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists and promote sustainable modes of transport. The project will also contribute to reducing motorised traffic, thereby enhancing the area's quality of life and creating a more attractive environment for residents, businesses and visitors.

The central element of the project is the development of a shared traffic space where pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles can move freely without grade-separation or curbs, with priority given to pedestrians and cyclists. The shared space will extend over 3,580.80 m² and include 438 m of dedicated cycling infrastructure. Speed display signs and other supporting infrastructure will also be installed to enhance cycling safety and encourage greater bicycle use.

The €5,173,477.70 project will receive €2,382,647.71 from the European Regional Development Fund. The beneficiary of the funding is the Urban Municipality of Celje.

Redevelopment of the Zoran Velnar street in Murska Sobota

The project aims to develop a safe, functional and sustainably designed cycling street in Murska Sobota city centre. It will create a safe and accessible transport environment that provides equitable conditions for all road users and contributes to enhanced quality of life and sustainable urban mobility.

The project includes comprehensive reconstruction of traffic surfaces, with particular emphasis on traffic calming, improving conditions for pedestrians and cyclists, and enhancing accessibility for persons with functional impairments. These measures will contribute to the creation of a more attractive and user-friendly public space. The project will also promote sustainable mobility, reduce transport-related emissions, and encourage a modal shift towards walking and cycling.

The €1,443,417.03 project will receive €896,345.46 from the European Regional Development Fund. The beneficiary of the funding is the Urban Municipality of Murska Sobota.
