Monthly Highlights: May 2026
Works Underway Along the Bank of the sv. Jernej kanal in Sečovlje
Maintenance works are being carried out along the sv. Jernej kanal in Sečovlje to improve flood safety, protect water infrastructure, and prevent coastal erosion. Rehabilitation and raising of embankments along a section more than two kilometres long have been completed, along with the renovation of the cycling path. Rehabilitation and Investments Underway in the Middle Sava Area to Reduce Flood Risk
Following the floods of August 2023, the Slovenian Water Agency has been carrying out extensive rehabilitation works and investments in the Middle Sava area to ensure long-term flood risk reduction. Between 2022 and 2026, 195.7 million euros has been allocated for these measures, including 50.3 million euros in 2026. Ongoing activities include rehabilitation works on the Kamniška Bistrica River, preparations for improvements on the Črna stream, and the restoration of Spodnji Galjevec. International “Giving Life to Rivers” Congress Focuses on Modern Approaches to Water Management and River Restoration
At the international Giving Life to Rivers congress in Ljubljana, organised within the LIFE2RIVERS project, experts discussed river restoration, water management, and climate change adaptation. Representatives of the Slovenian Water Agency and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning highlighted the importance of nature-based solutions, floodplain restoration, and cooperation between science, professional communities, and decision-makers. The congress promoted knowledge exchange and the development of modern approaches to reducing flood risks and protecting river ecosystems.
Presentation of the Tunjščica Dry Retention Basin Project: Next Steps Unveiled
The construction of a dry retention basin on the Tunjščica stream, a key project for reducing flood risk in the Pšata and Tunjščica catchment area, was presented in Komenda. The Slovenian Water Agency and the Municipality of Komenda are currently preparing project documentation and conducting land acquisition procedures. A building permit is expected by the end of 2026, with construction planned between 2027 and 2028. The 9.4 million euros project will be financed through the Water Fund and the Climate Fund and implemented in cooperation with the local community.
Water Agency and Municipality of Ljubno Sign Agreement to Continue Post-Flood Rehabilitation
The Slovenian Water Agency and the Municipality of Ljubno have signed an agreement to continue recovery efforts following the August 2023 floods. The project includes the regulation of nearly five kilometres of the Ljubnica, Krumpah, and Žep watercourses and the rehabilitation of more than four kilometres of road infrastructure. The investment is valued at over 18 million euros. The measures will improve flood and erosion safety while providing long-term, climate-resilient solutions for residents and infrastructure in the Savinja region.
One of the Largest Flood Protection Programmes on the Mura River Nearing Completion
Minister of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning Jože Novak visited flood risk reduction projects along the Mura River in the Pomurje region, including the newly completed Krog–Petanjci flood embankment. More than 26 kilometres of embankments, worth 47.5 million euros, are being constructed within the programme.
