Emergency medical assistance with an emergency doctor's vehicle: faster response and greater efficiency

On 1 April 2024, the emergency medical assistance system in Slovenia underwent a significant upgrade. A new mobile unit – an emergency doctor's vehicle (EDV) – was introduced into field work. This change represents a major step towards more flexible, faster and professionally targeted intervention in emergency medical situations.

By introducing the EDV, the new organisation brings significant advantages. Emergency doctors are no longer permanently assigned to the emergency ambulance team, but operate from their own specially converted and fully equipped vehicles. The EDV has all the necessary medical equipment and medicines to perform even the most demanding medical interventions. In addition to the emergency doctor, the other member of the team is a registered nurse who acts as the driver of the vehicle and actively participates in performing demanding medical procedures together with the emergency doctor and the emergency rescue vehicle (ERV) team.

To this end, a public call for proposals for co-funding the purchase of emergency doctor's vehicles at the primary level of healthcare in the Republic of Slovenia for 2025 and 2026 was also published in the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).
