Statement by Prime Minister Golob on Slovenia's full membership in CERN
Today is a historical day for Slovenia. By becoming a full member of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), we are joining one of the most prestigious scientific institutions in the world. We are becoming part of a community of countries that are shaping the future of one of the largest and most advanced research organisations in the world. This is a clear message that Slovenia believes in science – as the foundation for development, as an investment in the future and as a bridge to the world.
But this moment is not merely symbolic. It is a recognition of the long-standing dedication of Slovenian scientists, who, with their knowledge and perseverance, have put Slovenia on the European and global scientific map. Their contribution has brought us to the point where we will be able to participate equally and actively in the scientific community and administrative bodies of CERN and co-manage the research infrastructure.
Full membership provides access to cutting-edge research infrastructure, including the Large Hadron Collider. It enables direct participation in groundbreaking research and key experiments in particle physics. It strengthens Slovenia's role in the global scientific community and consolidates our position among countries that understand that knowledge is the only true path to the future. This also entails political responsibility and an opportunity for strategic engagement in one of the world's most advanced scientific communities.
The benefits of membership go beyond science. They are linked to the economy, education and innovation. Our companies will be able to participate in technologically demanding projects, thereby acquiring new skills and developing innovative solutions with high added value. Our young researchers will have the opportunity to gather and apply knowledge in an environment where science transcends the boundaries of what is possible. These are opportunities that do not arise often, but Slovenia knows how to recognise and exploit them.
CERN is more than just a research institution. It is a place where humanity seeks answers to the biggest questions of our existence, where cooperation conquers divisions and where humanity can come together in the search for truth for the sake of development, progress and, above all, peace. Where reason leads the way. Therefore, on 3 July in Geneva, it will be a special honour for me to raise the Slovenian flag and thereby celebrate our knowledge, our responsibility and our future.
I believe that membership in CERN will strengthen Slovenian science in the long term, accelerate technological development and open doors to innovation. Perhaps even more importantly, it will strengthen our reputation as a nation that knows how to invest in knowledge and seek solutions that connect us and are groundbreaking at the same time.
Science is not just a laboratory thing. It is courage. It is responsibility. It is vision. Slovenia will always stand by science because we believe that knowledge is the greatest wealth we have. And because we believe in a world where reason prevails over fear.
