34th Statehood Day of the Republic of Slovenia & Slovenian Armed Forces Day at the Slovenian Embassy in Washington

Ambassador Mirošič hosted the 34th Statehood Day of the Republic of Slovenia & Slovenian Armed Forces Day at the Slovenian Embassy in Washington on June 4, 2025.

Ambassador Mirošič, in his speech, emphasized that Slovenia and the United States of America maintain excellent and successful political, economic, and cultural relations, which we aim to preserve and further strengthen during the current administration of President Donald Trump. We are particularly pleased that the First Lady of the United States is of Slovenian descent, which represents an additional bond between our two nations. The Slovenian community in the United States is an important pillar of friendship and cooperation between our countries.

The political dialogue between Slovenia and the United States is close and constructive. The strategic dialogue forms the foundation of our bilateral relations. Looking ahead, we aim to further enhance cooperation in key areas such as energy, science, research, innovation, digital and cyber technologies, security, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, space technologies, and the economy. We also wish to deepen cooperation between the Slovenian Armed Forces and the Colorado National Guard.

As a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and a firm advocate of multilateralism, peace, progress, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, Slovenia will continue working with the United States in efforts to secure peace in Ukraine and the Middle East, where an immediate ceasefire and resolution of the humanitarian crisis are urgently needed.

A strong transatlantic bond remains essential for the security and stability of Europe. As a NATO ally and EU member, Slovenia remains firmly committed to strengthening the strategic partnership between the European Union and the United States of America.

The keynote speaker at the event was a U.S. Congressman of Slovenian heritage, Paul Gosar, who was awarded the Golden Order of Merit by President Borut Pahor in 2019 for his contributions to strengthening U.S.-Slovenian relations. In his speech, he congratulated Slovenia on its national holiday and highlighted the resilience, industriousness, and pride of the Slovenian people. He noted Slovenia’s remarkable progress and described it as a symbol of peace, cooperation, and forward thinking. The congressman also reminded the audience that the United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of its independence next year, and added that everything the U.S. has achieved, Slovenia can also accomplish.

Also addressing the audience was the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Sonata Coulter, who praised the strong relationship between Slovenia and the United States. She especially welcomed Slovenia’s plans to increase defense spending and boost cooperation in energy, science, and technology. The Commanding General of the Colorado National Guard, Major General, Laura L. Clellan, also emphasized the excellent collaboration between the Slovenian Armed Forces and the Colorado National Guard.

The event was made even more special by a performance from the Slovenian Armed Forces Band, whose music added a festive and dignified atmosphere to the celebration.
