Slovenia marks historic debut at Cine Europa 27 in the Philippines

In a significant milestone for cultural diplomacy, the Republic of Slovenia officially participated in the 27th edition of Cine Europa, marking the first time the nation has been represented in the festival’s prestigious history.

This debut follows the landmark establishment of the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Manila—the first and only Slovenian diplomatic mission in Southeast Asia. Slovenia’s inclusion in the festival signals a new era of artistic exchange and the continued strengthening of bilateral relations between Slovenia and the Philippines.

Dragan Barbutovski, Chargé d’Affaires of the newly established Slovenian Embassy in Manila, said that “it was honour to join the festival and share cultures through film. We might be thousands of miles apart but, at the end of the day, we have the same passion for certain things, the same emotions. Those are what bring us together,” he said at the press launch.

A cinematic exploration of justice and morality

Slovenia’s inaugural entry was the evocative thriller-drama "The Man Without Guilt" (L'uomo senza colpa), directed by Ivan Gergolet. Set against the industrial backdrop of Trieste, the film explores the profound moral complexities of restorative justice, revenge, and forgiveness. Through the narrative of a widow confronting the man responsible for her husband’s death, the film offered Filipino audiences a sophisticated glimpse into contemporary Slovenian and European cinema.

Expanding cultural horizons across the Philippines

Cine Europa 27 featured a curated selection of 20 films from various EU Member States, with Ukraine participating as a guest. The festival highlighted the creative traditions and diverse histories that define the European cinematic landscape.

Demonstrating a commitment to accessibility and mutual respect, the festival commenced with a gala red-carpet event at Shangri-La Plaza in Manila before embarking on a nationwide tour. From 18 to 27 October 2024, free screenings were held at several prestigious regional venues, including:

  • University of the Cordilleras, Baguio
  • University of San Agustin, Iloilo
  • University of the Philippines Visayas, Cebu
  • FDCP Cinematheque Centre, Manila

This annual festival has become a cherished tradition, nurturing the partnership between the Philippines and the European Union while deepening mutual appreciation for global artistry. Slovenia’s historic participation underscores its dedication to this shared language of film and the fostering of international cultural understanding.
