Andrej Nared graduated and received his PhD in history from the Department of History in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana. He has worked for the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia for the last 25 years; initially as the archivist entrusted with the care for the Archives’ older archival fonds, theme collections and private fonds, and since 2013 as the deputy director.

Gratitude to Bojan Cvelfar for ten years of successful management of the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia

On Tuesday, May 30, 2023, Dr Andrej Nared and Dr Bojan Cvelfar completed the handover of business at the Gruber Palace in Ljubljana. Dr Nared took this opportunity to thank his predecessor Dr Cvelfar for his successful decade long running of the Archives. He drew attention to a number of successfully completed projects of the last ten years under Dr Cvelfar's directorship. It was also an opportunity for both of them to have a look ahead at some of the challenges that the Archives is currently facing or is about to tackle in the near future. Especially troubling is the lack of qualified archival staff due to a number of recent retirements, and the increase in the scope of the work that the Archives has been charged with by the Slovenian archival legislation in the field of managing both physical and digital archival records. Special attention was given to the ongoing construction work at the Poljanska Road 40 in Ljubljana, where a new archival building is currently being built in the monument protected building of the former military barracks. The construction is expected to end at the start of the next year, and the employees of the Archives are expected to move into the new building at the end of the same year.

A visit to the construction site for the new building of the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia with the Minister of Culture Dr Asta Vrečko

After the handover of business, there was a tour of the construction site on Poljanska Road 40 in Ljubljana where the new building of the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia is currently being built. In his last official duty as the director of the Archives, Dr Cvelfar presented the progress of the construction works to the Minister of Culture Dr Asta Vrečko, who in return thanked him for the successful work and wished him all the best in his further career. She expressed her satisfaction that an important institution, such as the Archives, will finally get a new headquarter for which it had been waiting for three decades: “This place will be used for protecting our memory and heritage. This new archival building will be contemporary, open and built in accordance with the highest and the latest standards, which is something we are very proud of”. Dr Vrečko also wished the new acting director Dr. Nared a lot of success in his management of the Archives.
