Reducing the backlog of aliens cases

  • Ljubljana Administrative Unit
In the first three months of this year, the Ljubljana Administrative Unit has made significant progress in resolving pending cases in the Civil Registers, Aliens and Nationality Division, Aliens Departments, with more cases being resolved each month than were received. Thus, since January this year, we have reduced the number of pending cases by almost eight thousand.

We started with 17,882 pending cases in 2023 and, despite receiving 1,500 new applications every month, we have significantly reduced the number of pending cases in a very short period of time. This is proof that, with the right organisation of work, better efficiency can be achieved.

29 staff members in the Aliens Departments deal with aliens cases. The reduction in the backlog of all aliens' applications was achieved both through the considerable efforts of the officers at Tobačna 5, in the Aliens Departments and the Aliens Records Department, and through the partial transfer of case processing to Linhartova cesta 13, where an additional 6 officers are working on the cases, with extra support provided by the technical staff (7 employees).

In addition to a different organisation of work and the inclusion of staff from other sectors, positive effects on the reduction of the backlog are also visible following the amendment of the State Administration Act (proposed by the Ministry of Public Administration), which provided for the possibility of transferring local authority between administrative units, and the amendment of the Foreigners Act. The Ljubljana Administrative Unit has already transferred 1,700 cases to other administrative units. This ensures faster and more efficient resolution of cases for service users, and helps the Ljubljana Administrative Unit to relieve the burden on officials and to reduce backlogs.
