In Montevideo, Minister of Foreign Affairs Tanja Fajon met with Carolina Ache Batlle, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. During their talks, the two high officials expressed interest in strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

"Next year will mark 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Slovenia and Uruguay, so I hope that we will use this occasion to strengthen our cooperation. There are many opportunities and a great deal of potential, especially in digitalisation, artificial intelligence and green technologies," said Minister Fajon.

Slovenia and Uruguay share similar views on a number of international issues, especially in the framework of international organisations. Fajon and Batlle also discussed the third CELAC-EU Foreign Ministers' Meeting, which took place on 27 October 2022 in Argentina, and the EU's cooperation with the region.

During her visit to Uruguay, Minister Fajon also met with Sebastian Riss, Executive Director of the Uruguay XXI Investment and Export Promotion Agency, to discuss opportunities to foster closer economic cooperation.

The discussions between Minister Fajon and Beatriz Agrimon, Vice-President of the Republic and President of the Senate, focused on bilateral relations between the two countries, with particular emphasis on the potential of parliamentary diplomacy. They also stressed the importance of multilateralism and the role and empowerment of women.

The Minister concluded her visit to Uruguay with a meeting with representatives of the Slovenian community. She thanked the First Slovenian Prekmurje Society, which is the oldest Slovenian association in the region with over 150 members, for its commitment to preserving Slovenian roots and culture, as this is what unites us despite the great geographical distance.
