Reaction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia to the statements made by the State Secretary for National Policy of Hungary on the Težišče programme

After hearing the statement by State Secretary Árpád János Potápi during the Težišče television programme on 10 March 2022 that the Mura was the border river between Slovenia and Hungary, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia immediately called the Ambassador of Hungary to Slovenia, Andor F. Dávid, requesting appropriate clarifications.

During the call the Ministry highlighted the sensitivity of the topic. Mentioning the Mura as a border river opens up the possibility of different interpretations that can harm both interstate relations and relations between people, especially in Prekmurje.

In the meantime, the Hungarian Embassy has published a corresponding explanation that the statement was a linguistic lapse and that the border between Hungary and Slovenia was undeniably determined by an international treaty.
